Staff from Ellesmere Co-op were treated to a day on the Mere after volunteering to clear up gardens in the town.

On Sunday July 22, the staff from the Co-Op store volunteered to do community work on the Mereside gardens, while the Ellesmere branch of the shop was closed for refurbishment.

They keenly spent the day clearing up the promenade borders of overgrown weeds.

Tim Hunter from Shropshire Council said: "I am very, very grateful for all the hard work put in by the Co-Op staff this weekend."

The team of seven working alongside Tim put in a tremendous effort – and this did not go unnoticed by the staff of Ellesmere Rowing Boats.

Gareth Read who works at the boats said: "I noticed how much brush this group had cleared and Josh who works alongside me suggested we give them a well deserved free outing on the rowing boats. This they gladly took up and had a great time on the Mere."

Co-Op team manager Mandy Byrne said: "We thoroughly enjoyed the day and we are hoping to continue to do this three times a year."

The Co-Op store re-opens on August 3 and Ellesmere Rowing Boat and Pedalo Hire is open every day from midday until 5pm until September.
