Councillors have voted unanimously to begin discussions about whether Whitchurch Town Council takes on Centre North East to safeguard as a community venue.

In its latest full town council meeting, held last Thursday, Councillor John Sinnott explained that he placed the item on the agenda because he had been told in past that no need for the council to take over as the town's Beacon Church would do it.

However, it was later announced they would not, so Cllr Sinnott thought it better going to council resources to provide security for current users include the youth club.

Whitchurch town clerk Nicola Young told the meeting the White Lion Community Group been set up for transition from Shropshire Council, include Cllr Andy Hall, Men in Sheds and other groups.

She also told the meeting an application for community transfer has gone in, but one room currently unusable for hole in roof and wall, and may cost around £35,000 to fix.

However, she quoted a Shropshire Council official who told her he would expect the building to be in reasonable condition on transfer.

Cllr Alan Chesters seconded the proposal, stating: "There’s no harm into entering into a discussion."

Meanwhile, members also backed Cllr Sinnott's proposal for the clerk to purchase appropriate recording equipment in order to ensure all minutes from meetings are captured correctly.

The town council is now up to 14 members, only one away from full capacity after another newcomer was co-opted onto the council on Thursday night.

Dominik Pokladecki spoke to members before the vote. He said: "I came here about 10 years ago, went to Sir John Talbot for school and studied business.

"I have worked around town and now own a waffle shop with my mum in the High Street.

"I have plenty of interests, and I’d like to join because I want the opportunity to do something for the town as well as do something to develop my own life skills."

Cllr Pokladecki was voted on unanimously.

The minutes from the newly-formed Events and Entertainment committee were passed, as well as the Heritage and Finance committees.
