Whitchurch Town Council is set to discuss the option of ‘safeguarding a community building’ at tomorrow night’s meeting at the Civic Centre.

The council have a motion on the agenda for the meeting which Councillor John Sinnott has put forward with a view to protecting Centre North East in Bridgewater Street for the townspeople of Whitchurch.

Nicola Young, Whitchurch Town Council clerk, says that nothing is guaranteed and that talks are at the earliest stages.

“Whitchurch Town Council are keen to safeguard community buildings for the use of townspeople,” she said.

“Cllr Sinnott has placed this item on the council’s agenda to bring awareness that the building is on the Shropshire Council community asset transfer list and discuss whether Whitchurch Town Council wish to get involved with the building and the asset transfer process for Centre North East.

“Whitchurch Town Council understand that the community have been working hard to keep the asset local and want to assure current users of the building that we wish to work with them for the benefit of the town.”

The building is currently home to the Whitchurch Men in Sheds community group and youth services.

Cllr Sinnott told the Herald: “I’ve said we should investigate taking over the centre as Shropshire Council have placed it on the transfer list.

“I think we should make sure that children are still able to use the centre. I know that other parties are interested in the centre.”

Other items on the agenda include a report from Shropshire Council portfolio holder for highways and transport Steve Davenport regarding the issue of the roads in and around Whitchurch, especially Waymills. Cllr Davenport will also answer any questions following his report.

The meeting takes place at 7.15pm.
