Residents of Ellesmere woke up on July 17 to find that their town was looking a little different…

Public spaces on Cross Street and Willow Street have been ‘yarn bombed’.

Yarn bombing is where trees and street furniture are covered and decorated with knitted, crocheted and woven items. It’s a cheerful sight, and one that the ‘Ellesmere Yarn Bombers’ hope will bring joy to those that see it.

The group of local craftspeople has been busy for the last few months creating items for the display. It is even rumoured that the local Cubs and Beavers have been involved – but as is traditional with these projects, the ringleaders wish to keep their identity a secret.

“We just hope it will raise a smile,” said a spokesperson for the group.

“Lots of people have contributed to this project, some bringing simple squares that they’ve knitted, others creating amazing works of art. They all share a wish to make the town cheerful and welcoming for locals and visitors alike. We hope that people enjoy the results. We’ve certainly enjoyed doing it.”

The yarn bombing will remain in place until the end of the summer holidays. If people enjoy it there will be collection boxes at nearby shops, Ismay’s and Vermeulen’s. All money raised from these donations will go to Our Space Community Centre and Library in Ellesmere.

With another craft project planned for the autumn, the group won’t be putting their needles down just yet. If you would like to get involved, the word is that Ismay may have inside information on how to join. But keep it under your (knitted) hat...
