Staff at Ellesmere Our Space community centre and library are hoping to create a unique garden of flowers as a way to commemorate the centenary.

The project is for schools, individuals, groups and clubs to join together to make a garden of larger than life flowers – approximately 10 inches in size – to help remember the men and women of Ellesmere who served, fought and gave their lives in the First World War.

The garden, made up of poppies, peace lillies and forget-me-nots would also commemorate those at home who were also affected by the war.

The project, called Flowers of Peace and Remembrance, will see the grounds of Our Space in Trimpley Street transformed from November 10 to December 7, and will join many other remembrance activities taking place in Ellesmere.

Sally Poynton, the organiser of the project said: “We’ve thought for a while we could do with an arty project here in the library, and we didn’t want it to be for the sake of doing one.

“When we had an exhibition on the First World War, we thought the flowers would make a great exhibition as well as representing the people of Ellesmere during the war.

“We have a great lawn space outside the library, and it will give it some profile since we’ve recently moved.

“The project will also benefit the Royal British Legion, who will be laying a centrepiece among the flowers when we celebrate the centenary in November.”

Sally added: “You can sew, weave, paint – the possibilities are endless.

“You can use anything, be creative and innovative. The library will host flower idea workshops during September and October.

“Ask your school, friends and family, clubs and groups, local businesses if they would also like to take part. We have plenty of flowers to make.”

If you are unable to make a flower, there is also the opportunity to adopt a flower of peace and remembrance.

When the flowers are made, individuals and businesses are invited to adopt a flower. It will cost the organisers £3 to stage each flower, so donations are welcomed and any leftover money after the event will be donated to The Royal British Legion.
