A WHITCHURCH resident campaigning for a reduced speed limit on the A525 has admitted she is pleased with the progress being made, but still wants to reduce the limit more.

There have been fatal accidents on the road by Villa Farm, Broughall, in recent months and residents have decided enough is enough, campaigning for a speed limit of 40mph around the bend.

Cheryl Langley, who lives in the area, has been in correspondence with Shropshire councillor Gerald Dakin, as well as West Mercia Police, and has achieved an early victory with both police and Shropshire Council happy to drop the speed limit to 50mph.

But Mrs Langley is still hoping for more from both parties. and wants a budget for traffic calming measures.

“It’s great to hear that things are moving in a positive direction and I thank all involved for taking the time to pursue the safety of the A525 in Broughall,” she said. “I am really concerned about the proposed speed limit of 50mph; I understand that these things are not simple and there are complex processes involved. I really would like to emphasize the issue of the crossroads.

“Provided mirrors only help to a certain degree; there are particular instances when the mirrors are no help at all – for instance when the sun is at a certain angle in the sky it throws a shadow over the view to the right, or in the autumn/winter the mirrors condensate and there is zero visibility. On several occasions I have pulled out slowly because of lack of visibility in the mirrors and I have had to act quickly and reverse back to the junction.

“I feel that even if the traffic warning system is keeping the traffic to 50mph this is still too fast to react quickly enough to avoid collision.”

In an email seen by the Herald, Shropshire Council’s Dave Gradwell told Cllr Dakin: “The police have confirmed they would have no objection to the introduction of 50mph speed limit on the A525.”
