Councillors in Wem are set to discuss a request from RAF Shawbury at the monthly full town council meeting on Thursday (7pm).

The council has been approached by RAF Shawbury who have requested to be able to exercise their freedom of the town on September 1 as part of the 100-year anniversary celebrations.

Meanwhile, councillors will continue to discuss nominations for the 2018 Honourary Townsman.

However, they will conduct these discussions in the private part of the meeting, which excludes press and public.

The meeting will start with a 15-minute period of public participation, where residents from Wem can put questions to councillors or raise issues that can then be answered there or added to future agendas.

There are three planning applications to be considered by councillors, including reserved matters for a proposed dwelling in Shawbury Road

There is also an application to fell two Cypress trees and one Lawson Cypress within the Wem conservation area in Mill Street.

The final planning application for councillors' comment is the building of a single-storey side extension at 3 Marlcroft in Wem.

There will be a discussion about the proposed closure of the Barclays Bank baranch in the town, which is scheduled for October this year.

Councillors will also consider whether to hold a special meeting to hear more information on the proposals for Future Fit, which is currently under a consultation period.

The nearest Future Fit exhibition is in Shrewsbury while residents can also head to Oswestry or Market Drayton.

There will be updates on highways issues, including result of the Wem Economic Forum's traffic working party consultation and also on HGV signs

n Meanwhile, the town will be hosting a special service on Saturday, June 30 to celebrate Armed Voices Day.

The service, which is to honour past and present service representatives, will be held at the War Memorial and Wem Parish Church.

All are invited to attend a short service of thanksgiving at the memorial which is led by new town mayor Councillor Connie Granger at 11am.
