The organiser of Whitchurch popular Relay for Life for Cancer Research UK is urging people to head down to Alderford Lake to support participants.

The relay takes place from 11am on Saturday, June 30 and will finish exactly 24 hours later as people who are living with or have survived cancer will be joined by families and friends for the event.

Ruth Hislop is hoping to see as many people there as there is enough to keep all entertained while the relay is happening.

"We have lots of exciting events happening during the 24 hours," said Ruth.

"We have a Japanese Drummer Group, local choirs, a charity Basset waddle at 2pm on the Saturday followed by a charity dog show at 3pm. Again everyone is invited.

"It all starts at 11am when I will be leading the Opening Ceremony and our teams I hope will all be in fancy dress.

"We have various themed laps happening too.

"Just before it gets dark we hold our candle Hope Ceremony where we remember those who have lost their lives to cancer and lit up decorated candle bags.

"It is a 24-hour event – cancer never sleeps, so neither do we. We all take it in turns to walk round the track."

There will be 11 categories including handsomest dog and prettiest bitch for the dog show, where entry is £1 and entries open at 1pm.

There will be 22 cancer survivors present, while Whitchurch Alport are among the groups to have entered a team, and for more about the weekend, head to Whitchurch Relay for Life on Facebook.
