Whitchurch

LJC Meeting

The Civic Centre will host the latest Whitchurch Local Joint Committee Meeting tonight (Wednesday), starting at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm allowing for members to mix with the public.

The meeting will confirm the minutes of the meeting held on February 21 before hearing from members of Partners and Communities Together (PACT), including police, fire and ambulance service staff.

Kevin Aitken, highways manager for Shropshire Council, will be there to discuss the results of the recent parking strategy consultation.

The meeting was delayed from early this month so more information could be given regarding Future Fit, and there will now be a presentation about it called "The transformation of local hospital services is now in the hands of local

people with the launch of the 14-week Future Fit public consultation" - more can be found at www.nhsfuturefit.org/

After this presentation, there will be a Question Time, with attendees and residents able to ask the top table questions.

Book reading

A Shropshire writer will be coming to Whitchurch's Bookshrop on Friday, June 22 to launch her new book.

Kate Innes, who is based near Much Wenlock, will read from 'All the Winding World', which is the sequel to her medieval times-based novel 'The Errant Hours', from midday at the store in Green End.

There will also be a celebratory glass of fizz for visitors and Kate will then sign copies.

'All the Winding World' continues the story of Illesa Arrowsmith whose perilous journey with a secret manuscript saw her travel from her home Shropshire valley to the western reaches of medieval Britain, and the holy shrine of Bardsey Island.

'All the Winding World' is set ten years later, during the disastrous Anglo-French War of 1294-96, one of Edward I’s rare military defeats. Sir Richard Burnel has been forcibly recruited to lead a division into France in order to regain control of the Duchy of Gascony.

Whitchurch WI

Simon Martin, Story Teller/ Bodger, delighted us at our June meeting with his entertaining stories. He held us spellbound whilst he told us tales, some based in Ireland, and one locally in Wem and Clive, while we sat around a lit candle.

The candle has significance in his storytelling and after his last story, we stood around it and blew it out – a lovely ending.

Our next meal out will be on Thursday, July 26 7.15pm at Simply Thai.

The competition of a table decoration to include wood, was won by Carole Griffiths, second Jackie Blakely and third Pat Busby.

Craft Club will be on Friday July 6, at 2pm at the Bradbury Day Centre.

Our next meeting is on Monday, July 9, 7.30pm at the Civic Centre which will be a social evening and the competition of a confectionery item will be judged by the members.

The winning recipe will then be forwarded to the Federation for inclusion in their book.

RNLI

The Whitchurch Branch of the RNLI held its 48th Annual General Meeting this month at the Dodington Lodge.

Stuart Payne, the treasurer, recorded a very successful year with £3, 693.10 being sent to headquarters.

Chair Susan Lines thanked everyone for their support including many friends who help at functions and the general public who are generous on collection days.

Mr Payne has received a gold bar, to go with his gold badge, after reaching 30 years service for the RNLI. Iris Ridgway, who is honourable secretary, received an award of Honourary Life Governor of the Institution for being secretary for 43 years.

Bronington

Community Council

Bronington Community Council is set to meet tonight (Wednesday) at the Whitewell Parish Rooms at 7.30pm for their June meeting.

The meeting will start in earnest with an open forum for residents to put issues forward to council members.

There are two pre-determined speakers, as Matthew Kell, regulatory officer, Industry Regulation Team Natural Resources Wales, will speak to the meeting.

Meanwhile, Rob Middleton, Farm Adventures, will talk to the meeting about a planning application for the use of approximately seven acres of agricultural land together with existing modern farm building as a farm education and activity centre together with the erection of a toilet block, construction access arrangements and ancillary parking at Cae Bach, Ellesmere Road, Bronington.

Mr Middleton has previously tried to achieve planning permission from Wrexham Borough Council, but was rejected after residents objected over fears the activity centre would be used to host weddings, plus stag and hen parties.

The planning application will then later be discussed by councillors.

Other items on the agenda include a report on Bronington School and to consider a request from the Bronington Shop for financial support for a burglar alarm.
