A major revamp may be on the way to a town centre building in Whitchurch.

The venture by Mr A. Halpern for 40 High Street could create up to eight full-time jobs by converting the building into a mixed use venture that would include office space, a dance studio and a venue space.

Two separate proposals have been submitted as part of the project with one detailing the changes required to the Grade Two listed building itself, including relocation of the staircase and inserting partitioning walls, while the other is for a formal change of use.

The proposal also seeks space for a parking area off Pepper Street for up to eight vehicles.

A planning statement by the agents Debtal Architecture says: "Sustainable conversion of otherwise empty buildings play an important role in the vitality of town centres such as Whitchurch.

"Currently 40 High Street has been empty for some time and has suffered from lack of care and insuffient maintenance with some parts in a desperate need of structural repairs.

"The redevelopment of the building will provide suitable occupation and will bring significant benefits to the commercial centre of Whitchurch and will enhance the character and overall setting of its historic core.

"Taking into account the above information it is clear that the alterations and subdivision of this otherwis failing premises into retail and apartments on the High Street can be considered a justifiable diversification from a drinking establishment."

Mr A. Halpern has also applied for planning permission to build two properties on the adjacent land off Pepper Street.

A decision on both applications is expected to be made by Shropshire Council planning officers by July 11.
