A group of Wem artists will be exhibiting their work showcasing the 'inspiration'-themed art.

Wem Art Society, which meet every week, is hosting its annual summer exhibition in St Peter and St Paul's Parish Church Hall in High Street.

The exhibition will have around 100 pieces of artwork on display, painted by the 26 members of the society, all based around the theme 'inspiration'.

Rosemary Foster, who has organised the event, said there will be wide variety of art work on display.

"There is such a mixture of artwork, from pen and ink to watercolour," said Rosemary, who has been part of the group for eight years.

"Everyone has their own styles, and it's great to be able to see people's progress from one year to the next. All the artists enjoy looking at each other's work, and giving guidance on how they could improve.

"There are some paintings of local scenes that they will recognise. The theme of this year's work is 'inspiration', so our artists have created what they find inspiring to them."

This year's exhibition will be officially opened by Wem Rural Parish Councillor Len Staines, whose wife Claire, a member of the Art Society, sadly passed away.

"She was amazingly courageous and determined, so our theme is for Claire as she was an inspiration," said Rosemary.

The preview takes place on Wednesday, May 30 at 7pm at the Church Hall, with the official opening at 7.30pm.

The exhibition will then be open from 10am to 4pm, from Thursday, May 31 to Sunday, June 3.

Last year, Rosemary said that around 50 people attended the preview and is hoping that even more will attend this year.

"People are welcome to come around and have a look at the artwork, there is no cost to enter but our chosen charity this year is Parkinsons UK, so any donations are gratefully received," she said.

Wem Art Society meet weekly on Tuesday afternoons in the Senior Club in Chapel Street. The group is a mixture of all ages, and take part in regular workshops and trips out.
