Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has launched an Easter fire safety campaign.

It aims to spread the word about the importance of having smoke alarms in the home – and to ensure they work.

A series of awareness events are being held at libraries across the county, including Oswestry and north Shropshire, featuring a colouring competition for children to teach them about fire safety.

Becky Castle, of the fire prevention team based at Shrewsbury fire HQ said: "The idea of the campaign is to encourage families to consider fire safety in not just their homes but also for family members and friends and neighbours

“If you are visiting family or friends over the holiday, you could offer to test their smoke alarms, check they work and can be heard, and discuss an escape plan for the whole family. How will you all get out if there is a fire?”

A total of 139 out of 224 accidental fires in Shropshire started in the kitchen, “the highest risk room” in the home in 2016 to 2017.

Smoke alarms were installed by 205 of the property owners but 60 of these did not work when fire broke out, said Becky.

“They were either faulty or there were no batteries installed. This goes to show that you not only have to install a smoke alarm but you must ensure that it works.”

Members of the Prevention team will be at six different libraries across the county in April from 10am to 1pm, including Market Drayton (April 4); Whitchurch (April 5); and Oswestry (April 9).

Free safe and well visits and free smoke alarms are available to elderly and vulnerable people. To apply for a visit call Shrewsbury fire HQ on 01743 260200.
