A party-goer has been cleared of wounding another man at a young farmers' club event near Whitchurch after he told a court he acted in self-defence.

Henry Holmes, 20, had been accused of an unprovoked attack in which the victim suffered a broken jaw.

Following a brief trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court a jury found Holmes not guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Lewis Evans.

Holmes, of Lower Offley, Stafford, had denied the charge.

The court heard both men were at a 1990s themed music night held in a marquee in Calverhall, near Whitchurch, in September, 2016.

Holmes, who was in a '118 118' fancy dress costume, told the court that it was Evans who had first swung a punch at him.

He said Mr Evans had knocked into him on the dance floor and then swung a punch at him, which did connect, but he said he was scared and so he struck out in self-defence.

Mr Evans said he was not a member of the YFC but had gone to the themed evening with a couple of friends.

He said he had been with his friends chatting to some girls and saw someone dressed in red shorts and a white vest like '118 advert' at the side of the dance floor.

Mr Evans said he had turned around but didn't remember anything else until he came round.

He needed surgery for two breaks to his jaw, one of which had to be pinned.
