Quiz night

Leonard Brothers Vet Centre is inviting people to their 'Charity Quiz Night' on Friday, April 6 at 7pm at the Civic Centre in Whitchurch.

They will be raising money for Desmond's fund which is a charity providing care for stray and injured cats in the local area.

It is a maximum teams of six at £2.50 per person, with lots of great prizes to be won so please come along from 7pm and bring your friends for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Coffee morning

The Bradbury Centre in Claypit Street is holding a coffee morning at the Civic Centre next Friday, March 23.

There will be a tombola stall, a raffle, cakes plus refreshments while all proceeds will go towards the centre' care comfort fund.

Doors open at 9.30am.

Coffee morning

The Whitchurch Committee for Macmillan Cancer Support is holding a coffee morning on Good Friday, March 30, in Whitchurch Civic Centre.

There will be hot cross buns as well as a prize draw, produce stall and bric a brac. Entrance is £1 and doors open at 9.30am.

Border singers

The Border Singers of Whitchurch, directed by Simon Davies and accompanied by Geoffrey Walker, will present a programme of ‘Music and Readings for Passiontide’ on Palm Sunday, March 25. This will take place in Saint Peter’s Church, Myddle (SY4 3RX), starting at 6.30 pm.

Following J S Bach’s motet ‘O Jesu Christ my life and light’, the evening’s sequence will include pieces by two of Bach’s contemporaries, the Czech composer Jan Dismas Zalenka, and George Frederick Handel. The contribution from Handel’s work will be the Passion sequence in ‘Messiah’, including ‘Surely He hath borne our Griefs’ and ‘He trusted in God’.

Other pieces on the Passiontide theme come from the works of Victoria, Purcell and Bruckner, with the sequence finishing on ‘Lux arumque’, a setting by the contemporary composer Eric Whitacre of a poem by Edward Esch. The musical items will be interspersed with readings from St Matthew’s gospel and the Book of Psalms, plus two poems and a Jewish proverb.

Services

At St Alkmund’s Whitchurch on Sunday, there is 8am Said Communion, 10am Sung Communion with activities for children and young people and 6.30pm Memorial and Thanksgiving Service for those who have died.

At Holy Immanuel Fauls, there is 9.30am Holy Communion and at Christ Church Tilstock there is 11am Holy Communion.

Bickerton events

There is a Bingo, tonight, Wednesday March 14 at Bickerton Village Hall to raise funds for the Holy Trinity Church, Bickerton. Doors open 7pm, eyes down 7.30pm. Tea and cake will be available.

Bickerton Parochial Church Council meets tomorrow night at 7pm in Bickerton Village Hall.

On Sunday there is Parish Communion at 11am at Holy Trinity Church.

There is a Jazz Big Band Night from 7.30pm on April 7 at Bickerton Village Hall. The Dave Egerton Big Band are playing tunes from the 1940's to the present day. The DE Big Band are Manchester's largest amateur big band and this evening promises to be hugely entertaining. Tickets £8 per person from 01829 720440.

A play called "The Conductor" is performed at Bickerton Village Hall on Aprill 28. It is based on writings by Shostakovich of his Seventh Symphony in C Major. In 1941, German troops surrounded Leningrad for more than 2 years and the battle claimed the lives of more than 1 million people.

In the mid of this devastation, Shostakovich worked tirelessly to complete his 7th Symphony - 'Sympthony for the People' The Symphony was played across the front lines of the Russian Resistance and it is claimed lifted an entire city in its darkest hour. 'The Conductor' is the story of how Shostokovich and Karl Eliasberg of the Radio Orchestra of Leningrad brought music to the people who needed it most. A powerful and wonderful performance. Today, Wednesday March 14 at St Oswald's Church, Malpas there is Holy Communion at 10am and Bell Ringing Practice at 7pm. Choir Practice is tomorrow at 6.45pm. On Sunday there is Communion at 8am and 11am and Evening Prayer at 6.30pm.
