A WHITCHURCH councillor has been reminiscing on the time he brought comedy legend Sir Ken Dodd to the town.

Sir Ken, who died on Monday aged 90, came to the town during Councillor Alan Chester's time as mayor at the start of the decade, but regularly visited Whhitchurch as he owned an empty property by Hill Valley golf course.

He put on a show for the town, but not before he popped into Cllr Chesters's former 'chippy' in Green End

"He used to come into the chippy in Green End; he always had Fish and Chips and used to eat at them at the counter talking to me," he said.

"Then he'd go off for a pint up by the Civic Centre.

"I came to know him through my brother who had many dealings with him over the years. He looked after his property up by the golf course.

"That's been empty for many years.

"When he came to perform at the event for my charity, we secured his services with a donation to his own charity.

"It was worth it as we made a lot of money on his performance for the mayor's charity that year."

Sir Ken was famous for the length of his shows, with some lasting four hours, and Cllr Chesters said this was no different.

It's believed some who chose to sit in the front row of the show came in for a proper roasting from Sir Ken, including friends of Shropshire councillor and former mayor Peggy Mullock

He added: "He did a proper Ken Dodd show for us that night.

"I'm proud to have been someone who brought such a comedy legend to perform in our town that night."
