Councillors in Whitchurch are being asked to take a step further to the town potentially featuring in an upcoming television show.

The town council were approached by a production company called Banijay productions who are putting together a show for an as-yet-unnamed major broadcaster.

The idea is being pitched by Team big Things, part of Banijay, and the premises is that the company would be funding numerous public art projects around the country and want members of the public to nominate their own village to win the chance of creating a new landmark for their community.

They added: "The unique process will see established artists working with the local people to create large pieces of public art that have specific meaning to their community.

"We want them to use public art as a way of creating a discussion about their own shared collective identity.

"The most important thing is that the town has a strong sense of community and a commitment to the project, as this is a journey they will all go on together with the goal to create a legacy piece of public art that generations will be proud of."

Whitchurch town clerk, Nicola Young, has responded upon the town council's behalf and councillors are being asked to agree in principle to apply for the project.

In her reply to the production company, Ms Young spoke of the town's heritage as one of the oldest in Shropshire and the strong community spirit fostered in the town.

She also spoke of the famous names that call, or have called, Whitchurch their home, such as Christina Trevanion and Sir Edward German, as well as providing plenty of testimonials from councillors, volunteers and workers based in the town.

She added: "Over the last seven years this town has worked hard to give itself an identify and galvanise the community with many ‘whole-town’ events and projects.

"Whitchurch Town Team was formed, following the Portas Report and the team continues to work to this day on developing Whitchurch, through an increased number of town events, community projects and initiatives, such as Walkers Are Welcome and Fairtrade Town status, a town website has been developed and is continually updated by volunteers, and town litter picks in response to national events.

"Whitchurch is truly a market town of community...and is the oldest continually inhabited town in Shropshire and has been a town since the Roman times, you can find out more information about Whitchurch on the town website www.whitchurch.info

"We are also renowned for being a stop-off point for people walking and cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End – again ‘town in mid-plain’."
