No to Aldi...

Dear Sir,

I want Whitchurch town centre to survive and have a wide range of shops. For any town centre to survive, let alone thrive, there must be a good number of people choosing to visit the town centre.

Whitchurch doesn't have a good range of public transport; the majority of people either walk in because they live there or drive by car. Town centres wither when there isn't plenty of good free parking and from Shropshire Council's plans to push up parking fees it's obvious that they couldn't care less whether Whitchurch town centre survives or dies.

The moment out of town stores with free parking appear, shoppers will just shop out of town. To suggest people will shop out of town and then drive into town and carry on is fanciful in the extreme.

In Woolwich, SE London where I grew up, when shopping centres grew up on redundant industrial land the town centre trade collapsed. Woolwich town centre languished for 20 plus years until the Docklands Light Railway came to town and posh and super-posh riverside apartments were built, which at £250,000 for a studio flat were completely outside the price range of local people born and bred.

So I am fiercely against any out of town stores, and that goes for Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose, M&S, whomever. Let Aldi set a precedent and I fear what the consequences will be.

We need your help

Dear Sir,

May I through your newspaper put out a plea? I am trying to get 20 people, male or female, fit and healthy to take part in a 'wingwalk' to raise money for Hope House in Oswestry, a hospice for children and young adults.

Participants can be aged from 18 to elderly but must be few than 13 stone in weight and if over 65, a doctor's note is required if they have any minor problems.

It will take place on a Wednesday or Thursday in June or July, with the final details TBC, at the base of Team Breitling, the word famous display team, in Gloucestershire. They can only do these flights in the week because of their weekends are fully booked with displays at home and abroad.

Anyone wishing to join can telephone me on 07565 521 347 and I will forward an application form to you. You will need to raise a minimum of £1,000 and if you do that, you are allowed by law to use £300 to pay for your flight and insurance. Some people like to pay for the flight themselves so all the money goes to Hope House.

You are allowed to take friends and family for free on the day.

Yours sincerely,

Des Clorley
