Malpas & Oswestry players fared well in the Shropshire Chess Congress 2018, held last week at the Wrekin Housing Trust, Telford.

Nathanael Paul is the new Shropshire chess champion after scoring 2.5 out of five in the very strong Shropshire Open on January 5-7.

Nigel Ferrington, Nathanael and Phil Zabrocki were the top Shropshire players in the Open and will share the title, but Nathanael will keep the trophy, in a gentlemen’s agreement between the three of them, as Nat had faced the strongest opponents (including Grandmaster Keith Arkell) and had the lowest rating.

Nat plays the occasional game for Malpas & Oswestry in the Wirral and Chester & District Leagues, and he recently won the Malpas Handicapped Lightening Tournament on Christmas Eve.

The Major Section was won by Chris Lewis and Glyn Pugh, both with 4 out of 5. Chris also plays the odd game for Malpas & Oswestry in the Oswestry in the Wirral and Chester & District Leagues, and came second in the Malpas Handicapped Lightening Tournament on Christmas Eve.

The Intermediate Section was won by Dominic Bareford who is a regular for Oswestry in the Shropshire League and with Malpas & Oswestry in the Wirral and Chester & District Leagues.
