Whitchurch’s Beechtree Centre, in Claypit Street, is launching a new project designed to help people get into sport.

The Sociable Sports Project – funded by Peoples Postcode Lottery and delivered by Beechtree Community Centre – is encouraging people to join in with games of New Age Kurling, Boccia and Badminton to meet new people.

The free sessions start on Wednesday, February 7 between 2-3pm at Whitchurch Civic Centre Sports Hall, and are available for all physical abilities.

To find out more, contact James at Beechtree Community Centre on 01948 666612.

Meanwhile, the centre is looking for volunteer drivers for the Shropshire Community Car Scheme, which they organise to provide transport for essential journeys where public transport is either unsuitable or not available and the passenger does not have access to a vehicle.

Volunteers use their own vehicles and Shropshire Council reimburses at a set mileage rate for each journey and any out of pocket expenses.

Drivers are required in all areas of Shropshire, so if you feel you can spare a few hours please contact Linda Field on 01948 664447.

Similarly, as the programme has proven invaluable for people who are unable to use other forms of transport and need to get out and about, those who wish to use the service can do so by booking with your local volunteer coordinator.

Passengers contribute £0.30p per mile towards the cost of the journey; your local coordinator can advise you of an approximate cost when you book transport.
