The Whitchurch Relay for Life is back and more people are being urged to join its army of volunteers.

The relay will return to Alderford Lake in June for it’s sixth outing which sees fundraisers stepping out for 24 hours, symbolising how cancer never sleeps, but neither will the people trying to beat it.

But it’s the small team of committee members that keep the event running smoothly and more are needed before the big day itself and new members are being sought to help take it forward.

Specifically, members are looking for a Candle of Hope chairman.

Ruth Hislop, event chairman, said: “It’s an important role but one somebody who would like to be part of a special part of our relay would love.

“At Relay itself one of the main ceremonies is the Candle of Hope ceremony. We try to get folks to decorate a candle bag either in the memory of somebody who has lost their lives to cancer, or for hope for the future. We ask a minimum donation of £1 per bag.

“We ask everyone to take time to reflect on those who have lost their lives to cancer and to look to the future when hopefully more folks will see more tomorrows.

Ruth added: “The Candle of Hope chairman is a key role and we would love a keen enthusiastic person to join us who would be able to come to our regular committee meetings, usually once a month, try to get these candle bags into the community and of course to organise the ceremony and the candle bags on the day.

“It is a lovely part of our relay and also a good way for us to raise money for our charity.”

Ruth continued: “We are also looking for others who might be able to help with the accounts and anyone who would like to become part of our enthusiastic fundraising committee who all are holding on to a common dream, that one day all cancers will have a cure.”

The Relay for Life will be held between June 30 to July 1.
