There’s always plenty happening in and around Malpas and surrounding areas, so here’s a little snippet.

Chess

Rhyl & Prestatyn 2 had won all their games this season in Division 3 of the Chester & District Chess League – until Malpas & Oswestry 2 visited them on Tuesday November 7, and came away with a 2-2 draw.

The away team won both top boards, with Peter Lovatt winning on 1 with white and Steve Rush winning with black on 2 against his old club, in his debut for Malpas & Oswestry.

On Thursday November 9 Malpas chess player Charles Lowick Higgie was in action for Oswestry in the Shropshire League, winning with white on board 2 to help Oswestry secure a 2.5-2.5 draw with telepost A.

Charles also played for Shropshire 1 over the week-end, in Doncaster, in Division 3 North of the National League.

Making his debut on board 5 of the first team, Charles drew on both Saturday and Sunday, helping Shropshire A to 5-1 wins on both days, to put them at the top of the division.

Celebration of the Queen

On Sunday, November 19, at Holy Trinity Church, Bickerton, there will be a celebration of the 70th wedding anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness Prince Phillip at the 11am Parish Communion Service.

There is also a baptism at Bickerton 1pm.

Meanwhile, St John’s Church in Threapwood will be holding a celebration at 9.30am.

At St Oswald’s Church, Malpas, the celebration will be at Communion at 8am and 11am and Evening Prayer at 6.30pm.

Surgery

Malpas Surgery is closed on Wednesday November 15 from 1pm to 5pm for staff training.
