WEM Young Farmers’ Club had a day to remember at the Shropshire Federation pre-rally, held at the Shropshire Showground in Shrewsbury last week.

As a small club they had a lot to prove and they set about it, entering all the various competitions on the day – from cooking and fencing to welding and efficiency of safety. And they managed to come away with some fabulous results.

Chairman Oliver Gittins and member Dave Perry came first and third respectively in the welding competition and the efficiency of safety team, made up of four members, finished in second place.

This was just the start of a fabulous day for Wem YFC. The last competition of the day and the most competitive was the tug of war.

Up against fierce competition and with high expectations after their impressive pulling in last year’s competition, the pressure was on.

The junior team got on the rope first, with determination and effort being put in from each and every member – it wasn’t a shock when they were crowned county junior tug of war champions 2017.

With added pressure now put on the ladies’ team to perform as well as the junior champions, the pull was on. Winning every pull and beating last year’s champions, the ladies were also crowned tug of war champions 2017.

Both teams are now preparing to compete in the next round held at the Three Counties Show in June.

“Massive congratulations go to all members who took part in the day,” said a club spokesman.
