WEM TOWN Council will make a number of written submissions to their county counterparts concerning traffic issues in the area.

At last week’s full Wem council meeting, councillors discussed two items concerning the future of highways in the town, including further measures following the survey of HGV traffic.

The measures were proposed by Wem Economic Forum and will ask for a loading bay outside the former NatWest bank in the High Street to be split between unloading and a disabled parking space.

The Forum also suggested a loading restriction for vehicles along the High Street, with morning rush hour and the end of the school day suggested as the times for the restrictions.

The final recommendation from the Forum is to change the direction of traffic along Chapel Street and Drawwell Lane.

Meanwhile, town clerk Penny O’Hagan will write to Shropshire Council concerning potentially implementing a one-way traffic system along Noble Street.

Shropshire councillor Pauline Dee requested the discussion at the town council after concerned residents brought up long-standing issues concerning the road and people parking all day.

It was agreed to write to Shropshire Council and ask Highways to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, the council will buy a Vehicle Activated Sign for Mill Street, but it will be smaller than previously expected.

The meeting also approved minutes from the Finance and Corporate Governance Committee meeting, held on April 18.

Items approved from that meeting included accepting a quote from Hiscox Insurance of £4,207.20 on a three-year long deal to be the council’s insurance provider.

It was agreed that the groundsman and the litter picker will share a “lone worker’s” device at a cost of £20 a month.

Councillor Chris Mellings provided a detailed report to his fellow members, including a list of works to be carried out in the town. There will be works in New Street, Park Road, Queensway, Shrubbery Gardens, Pyms Road and Summerfield Road.

There will also be work at Whitchurch Road, Wemsbrook Road, Wemsbrook Drive, Marlcroft and Crabtree Lane with the works spread out across May and June.
