THE OWNERS of Grocontinental, Whitchurch’s biggest employer, are the new operators of the Whixall Marina and will now run the business.

Whixall Marina Leisure Ltd – operated by the Grocott family – bought the marina from British Waterways Marinas Ltd (BWML) on March 31.

David Grocott, joint managing director of Whixall Marina Leisure Ltd, has insisted that as the new owners, they will maintain the high standards already set.

“We are committed to ensuring continuity of high-quality service for BWML’s customers at Whixall Marina, and remain equally committed to improving customers’ mooring experience.

"The investment made by BWML at Whixall has transformed the marina into a high-quality destination for boaters exploring the delights of the picturesque Llangollen Canal.

“The marina sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is close to the historic Whixall Moss which, together with its varied wildlife, is an area of international importance.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to now take the marina forward and be part of its future.”

BWML’s decision to sell off Whixall comes as it identifies a number of smaller marinas it felt would better privately operated.

Jeff Whyatt, BWML managing director, added: “Since BWML acquired Whixall in 2007, we have invested and upgraded significantly and are very proud of what Whixall now represents.

“But we have to be pragmatic and recognise another operator would be better placed to take it forward through the next stage of its future growth.

“Our customers can be assured that our main priority has always been not just the sale but securing Whixall Marina’s future as a great place to moor and that the service boaters receive from us is the highest throughout our portfolio of marinas.”
