ECO-friendly students at a Chester school heard the Government's green policies first hand after Cabinet minister Ed Miliband paid them a visit.

During a whistlestop tour of the region Mr Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, visited Upton High School to hear how the school has developed eco-projects since it was given specialist humanities college status two years ago.

Mr Miliband was welcomed to the school by lower sixth former Tom Davies, who heads the school’s eco group, as well as Jack Whitaker, chairman of fair trade group, upper sixth politics student Alex Steeland, headteacher Jane Holland and chairman of governors, Dolores Whitton.

Mr Miliband, visiting Chester in support of Labour Parliamentary candidate Christine Russell, was told the school had links with schools in Yemen, India, Africa and China, and about its developments with Oxfam’s Copenhagen Project.

More than 240 geography, environmental science and politics students then packed the school hall for their chance to grill the Minister during a question and answer session.

Mr Miliband, who arrived in Chester by train, urged students to tackle the issue of climate change on an individual level by becoming more eco aware.

He was presented with a Fair Trade “doggy bag” to sustain him through the rest of afternoon.
