Field Club

Malpas Field Club has two events in its programme for January. The annual New Year Ramble will take place on Sunday, January 7, starting outside the Jubilee Hall, Malpas High Street, at 1.30 pm.

This will be a four-mile walk, taking in Ebnal, Hollowood and Overton Common. Anyone is welcome to join the walk, including dogs, so long as they are kept on leads.

The first indoor meeting for 2018 will be on Wednesday, January 10 at Malpas High Street Church SY14 8PR (7.45pm), when David Hayns will give an illustrated talk ‘The Saint Oswald’s Story: Eight centuries at the heart of Malpas life’.

Chess

The Christmas Eve celebrations for Malpas Chess Club at the Old School Tea Rooms, Malpas, by kind permission of Gemma Moon went well.

The winners of the draw were picked by the Rector, Canon Ian Davenport. The lucky ticket holders were 1. Andrew Williams (“Willy”) from St Martins who won the £25 voucher for Chess and Bridge, 2. Dominic Bareford from Oswestry who won a bottle of Port, 3. Nathanael Paul from Newport who won a bottle of Prosecco, 4. Euan Stevenson from Overton, 5. Jenny Kendrick, 6/ John Harvey from Chester, 7. Charles Lowick Higgie from Malpas 8. Jenny Kendrick from Malpas 9 Sandra and Mike from Malpas, 10. Richard Bryant from Oswestry, 11 & 12 Andrew Williams (“Willy”) from St Martins 13 Charles Lowick Higgie from Malpas and 14 Brenda Southwood from Malpas.

This was followed by a time-handicapped lightening chess tournament, won by Nathanael Paul who tpook another bottle of Prosecco with six out of six, ahead of Chris Lewis on five and Charles Lowick Higgie on four, ahead of Dominic Bareford, Chris Paul, Bonnie, Sheena and Anastasia.

Meanwhile, there is a meeting of Whitchurch Chess Club at 7pm on Wednesday, January 3 at 7pm for a "How Good is Your Chess?" session where players guess the next move in a Grandmaster game.
