Residents wanting to save a village pub in Ash Magna are hoping to have ownership by January next year.

The group of residents, friends and supporters of the White Lion pub are rallying round to support efforts to buy the pub for the community.

The White Lion has been placed on the market for sale and faces imminent closure.

In response the community has risen to meet the challenge of buying the pub, supported by the national ‘More than a Pub’ initiative led by the Plunkett Foundation.

A management committee has been established and a formal share offer launched at the start of this month, with more than £200,000 already raised through the sale of shares, donations, grants and loans, against a target of £370,000.

Judith Griffin, chairman of the management committee said: “The response from villagers and friends of the White Lion further afield has been fantastic, demonstrating how cherished the pub is as the heart of a strong community.
