A Tushingham man has described the emotional journey to visitor his grandfather’s First World War grave in Israel.
Peter Moore Dutton, from Tushingham Hall, went on a week’s tour to the country with his wife Val and visited the grave of Samuel Worthington, who was killed on the advance up to Jerusalem on November 28, 1917.
Peter said he had long-desired to visit his ancestor, who is commemorated at the Old St. Chad’s Chapel in Tushingham and in the Memorial Chapel at Rugby School.
“I have for many years wished to visit the Holy Land and see my Grandfather’s grave,” he said.
“The 100th anniversary of his death spurred me into finding a convenient time to go.
“Explore travel company had a tour at the end of August. My wife and I had a most interesting time with an excellent Jewish guide called Yani.
“He said a prayer in Hebrew for the fallen at the graveside.”
Samuel’s brother-in-law, 2nd Lt. Gilbert Vawdrey, aged 20, was killed 18 days earlier at Ypres and is remembered on the pulpit in Tushingham Church.
