A new touring caravan site has been proposed near Wem.

Dominic and Sue Hughes of The Chapel at Pool Head have applied for a change of use of agricultural land close to their home which would be used to provide up to 10 pitches.

They also hope to convert an existing building to provide a block for toilet, shower, laundry and office facilities, plus amenity space.

A planning statement by agents Peter Richards and Co says Mr and Mrs Hughes are “caravan holiday enthusiasts” with “great understanding of the industry”.

It adds: “The provision of up to 10no. touring caravan pitches with the associated building, to be used in association with the Tranquil Group, will provide a different take on a popular holiday activity within the area.

“Tourism opportunities of this nature which encourages visitors to Shropshire.”

However, the proposal has been met with objections from neighbours because of its impact of the historical chapel, local watercourses and traffic.

One of those, Don Cooper, said: “There are numerous caravan sites in and around Wem, I feel that there is no justification to add another one in a totally unspoilt part of the countryside this will add extra traffic, possible pollution and noise from campers plus disruption to wildlife, with absolutely no advantage to local residents in face to the contrary it will devalue out quality of life and subsequently devalue our properties.”

A decision from Shropshire Council is expected by December 8.
