Whitchurch Rotarian Tom Kelly, MBE, has been applauded by the club after he completed his 21st annual charity effort over the summer.

However, the veteran fundraiser change what is his accustomed physical challenge of walking, climbing or cycling to hitch-hiking.

Tom’s 400-mile, 10-day charity hitch was completed without payment for transport from Aberdeen, in Scotland, to Whitchurch, involved some walking – including a 45 minute hike across the Forth Bridge – a variety of lifts and the comforting resource of his bus pass, saw him safely home.

This effort, which attracted around £3,000 in sponsorship, now pushes his charitable and humanitarian endeavours to exceed £73,000 to benefit 18 differing causes, home and abroad, including the latest venture with Nightstop, who organise with voluntary hosts, beds and sustenance for the night for homeless youngsters.

Tom joined Whitchurch Rotary in 1988, was made club president in 2003/04, and he is the club’s secretary.

Many of his ventures are prompted by his Rotary involvement, which along with his family, friends and business associates, provides financial and practical support.
