Whitchurch Cricket Club chairman Rod Jones is playing down the club’s chance to bounce straight back into the Birmingham League as just another game.

The Heath Road club currently lead the Shropshire Premier Division by 17 points on 371, ahead of Ludlow and will need a minimum of eight points to secure promotion with 24 the maximum available.

Alex Huxley’s men host mid-table St Georges at Heath Road, but while Whitchurch are expected to win, Jones insists they will be approaching the game as normal.

“All we can say is that we will do our talking on the pitch,” said Jones.

“We know other clubs have been trying to put us under pressure, by saying ‘the pressure is on us’ or ‘it’s our’s to lose’ and the like, but we just get on with playing the game.

“We take one game at time and move on.

“If we win it will top off a great season for the club – Division Four West winners, the under-11s retained the county cup for the third year, the under-13 are county league cup winners and runners-up in the county cup.

“Plus our under-13 girls were runners-up in the County Cup and we had a number of brilliant individual performances throughout the year.

“We hope the town turns out and supports us as we look for promotion back into the Birmingham League at our first attempt.”

Play starts at 1pm at Heath Road on Saturday.
