There was real flower power at Wem’s 28th annual Sweet Pea Show which is one of the largest of its kind in Britain.

The Eckford Sweet Pea Society of Wem show took place at The Thomas Adams School in Stanier Hall and in a large marquee in the grounds.

The weekend-long event was a bumper success, attracting more visitors than in previous years with all of them enjoying the creativity behind many arrangements and the beautiful fragrance of the sweet peas.

Judging took place in more than 70 classes, ranging from formal vases to bowls, baskets, plants, floral art and a children’s section.

The show also included a stand where visitors could seek expert advice on sweet pea problems.

Valerie Good, who helped out at the annual show, said: “We had a really good turn out, especially on the Saturday.

“The flowers were fantastic. There was a little bit of rain but people weren’t put off by it and they opted to stay around to see the flowers.”

Stalls selling gardening accessories, plants and souvenirs were also among the show’s attractions.
