The term ‘Cloud storage’ (also known as online storage) has become a big buzz word in the past year or so. It simply refers to an online space which is created for users to store and access data securely. With major corporations such as Google and Apple moving into the cloud storage market, it is evident that online storage will be playing a larger and larger part in our everyday lives. Being able to access your files from any computer is without a doubt a massive convenience, and with the introduction of tablets with little hard drive space, the reliance on cloud storage has never been greater. Online storage has been around for a long time, but only recently have we seen everyday consumers utilising these services.

Cloud based storage has become considerably cheaper and paired with ever increasing broadband speeds, backing up your data online has never been easier. In many cases, it is more efficient to use cloud based storage over traditional storage methods such as USB because you can’t lose them. One of the other primary advantages of online storage is the ease with which you can share your files with co-workers or friends. Cloud storage circumvents the need to send files directly or use spam ridden file transfer websites to transfer your data.

Cloud based storage will no doubt be used even more when high speed internet eventually becomes commonplace. It is still the case that if you want to access large files quickly from another computer, it can be quicker to use USB. Having a good internet connection is a must if you intend to be a heavy user of cloud based storage. Using a Broadband speed checker is a good way to ascertain if your internet connection can meet your downloading needs.

Despite the many advantages of using cloud based storage, there are improvements to be made before we can fully abandon traditional forms of storage. There are worries that cloud based storage services lack security as the data is stored remotely. If you intend to store very sensitive information, it is recommended that you research whether or not your online storage provider encrypts your data.

Cloud based storage will no doubt play a huge role in our backing up habits in the future. It is unlikely to be the first port of call for users looking to back up all their data until storage space becomes extremely cheap. With many websites offering small amounts of free storage space, it is advised that you take advantage of these services to see if using online storage is a method of backup that works for you.
