A woman from Wem who was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours has received her medal.

Gloria Johnson was presented with the British Empire Medal (BEM) by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Sir Algernon Heber-Percy, in a ceremony last week.

She was also invited to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace as part of the award.

The 63-year-old, who moved to Wem last year, was included in the honours list in recognition of her previous services to the community in the village of Measham, in Leicestershire.

At the time she told the Herald it was “a bit of a surprise.”

One of Gloria’s main roles in Measham was as part of a Central Government Programme which helped to regenerate the coalfields area which declined following the closure of the mines.
