A Wem man has been convicted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a motorcyclist had to have part of his leg amputated after being knocked over by a on-coming car overtaking a bin lorry.

Deon Zwanepoel, 58, was airlifted to Stoke Hospital on October 4, 2016, after the crash but surgeons were unable to save the lower part of his right leg following crush injuries after the incident on the A49 towards Whitchurch.

Stephen Singh, of Cordwell Park, Wem, was driving the Volkswagen Passat which struck Mr Zwanepoel and he admitted being the driver and driving carelessly but initially denied the more serious offence.

However, a jury at Liverpool Crown Court took just 45 minutes to unanimously find him guilty on Wednesday and Judge Andrew Menary, QC, warned him that all sentencing options will be open when he returns for sentence on October 12.
