A Wem man remains in police custody after the town’s High Street was shut down in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police were called to a property on the High Street shortly before 8pm on Thursday after reports of concerns for the welfare of a 23-year-old man at the address.

It is alleged that the man was making threats to kill when police arrived, with specialist officers arriving later to calm the man down before he was arrested.

“Following reports of a weapon, armed police attended the scene as a precautionary matter,” said a spokesman for West Mercia Police.

“The incident was contained to the property and no-one else was involved, there is no wider risk to the public.

“Negotiators were present at the scene, at around 12:40am, they managed to calm him down and he was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and later arrested.

“A 23-year-old man from Wem was arrested on suspicion of threats to kill, and currently remains in police custody.”
